Brutal Doom on Android

One of the best game mods for classic FPS Doom is now playable on Android..

Doom has long been established as a defining moment in video game history when shit got serious. A controversial step in the evolution of first person shooters that paved the way for future titles like Goldeneye, Half-Life and later Call of Duty.

Back in 1993, whilst console gamers were busy with Mario Kart or Street Fighter, PC Gamers were enjoying splattering the blood of demons and monsters. Although the 21 year old pixelated gore fest is laughable by todays standards with the likes of Halo and Borderlands, it is a cult classic and still very enjoyable to play. But like all good PC games, over the years, brilliantly minded nerds have worked on their own modifications adding new gameplay to the original offering and improving graphics and audio. One ground-breaking mod and possibly the most famous is Brutal. So much so that even the guy who made Doom originally (John Romero), has given praise for this work.

Brutal, as the name suggests, is an advanced difficulty mode for enhancing the gore and just shear carnage that makes the Rambo films look quite tame. On top of this, the mod will also improve how you enjoy this mayhem. How? Visual enhanacements to sprites, lighting, rendering and textures. This is most obvious with fire, explosions and when you get hit, you'll see cracks in your field of vision.

Improved weaponary and enemy damage is obvious too, especially when you blow off limbs and body parts with more powerful weapons like the shotun. One truly groundbreakin improvement though, is being able to aim down the sight too, for less hipfire and more marksmenship.

Audio is also improved with effects and the soundtrack, you can even hear the bullet shells hitting the floor and clicks in reloading. You have to try it, it genuinly transforms the game as if it was an official remake. Wish the same could be done for Goldeneye.

Anyway, back to the point.

Brutal is not new but it's availability to Android gamers is. This week the Android app Doom Touch got updated to support the open source "GZDOOM" game engine which the mod can run on, full gamepad mapping of all buttons including the ALT WEAPON (which is the aim down sight action) and other examples like Jump etc. So now you can add mods, textures and map the gamepad keys, just like any PC gamer could. Allowing us Android gaming nerds, the chance to taste Brutal blood splatter for ourselves. It is very processor heavy, so you will need a new and very fast processor like Snapdragon 800 or Tegra 4. For example, Xperia Z2 Tablet yes, Xperia Tablet Z, no (it lags too much).



Much credit has to go to Beloko Games, the guys who have clearly put a lot of work into the unofficial Android port that includes all these cool updates to support such mods and tweaks. Check out our video above to see Brutal Doom in action.

HOW TO SET UP BRUTAL MOD?

STEP 1 - Download D-Touch from Google Play store

STEP 2 - Open D-Touch for app to create folder on device memory

STEP 3 - Copy DOOM WAD file to FULL game folder inside Beloko

STEP 4 - Download BRUTAL mod file to device

STEP 6 - Create MODS folder inside Beloko/Doom/Full and copy BRUTAL file to here

STEP 7 - Start D-Touch and select BRUTAL mod before starting DOOM

C'est bon ça !

Pas d'androïd sous la main, quelqu'un de courageux pour tester ça avec autre chose que la shield? Ca serait sympa de voir si sur d'autres bécanes les touches physiques peuvent être reconnues.

Un jeu pour les artistes peintres on dirait, amateurs de rouge de préférence.

Pourtant le rouge est une (la) couleur la plus difficile à appliquer...
